Wednesday Chamber Chat: Honoring Tom Vignieri & Community Updates

This past week, CMC and the Congredi Quartet have received the official Proclamation from the Governor and Lieutenant Governor for their gold medal in this years Fischoff Chamber Music Competition! Congratulations on your accomplishments, Congredi!

The CMC community joins countless musicians and artists in mourning the loss of composer, educator, and mentor Tom Vignieri.

As Music Director of From The Top from 2007, hosting more than 250 shows, Tom was devoted to encouraging and inspiring young musicians. During his time at NPR, several CMC ensembles were featured on the nationally acclaimed NPR and PBS program (episodes 177, 180, 195, 233, 271, and more) which gave CMC students unforgettable opportunities to perform on a national stage.

Tom's connection to CMC extended beyond From the Top. In 2016, he composed There Will Come Soft Rains, a work commissioned for CMC’s New American music Project (a project envisioned and implemented by CMC artistic director Deborah Price) that remains a meaningful part of our artistic legacy. This is only one of many of Tom’s brilliant compositions.

Those who knew Tom remember not only his extraordinary musical gifts, but also his warmth, generosity, and unwavering belief in young artists. As CMC Artistic Director Debbie Price reflects, Tom "always welcomed each performer so beautifully, giving them the support they needed to play at the highest level." Former Assistant Artistic Director Stephanie Price adds that "This is what music is all about and it’s exactly what Tom did with young musicians. Helping them play their best so they could play from the heart.”

Tom's music, mentorship, and kindness touched generations of CMC students and faculty. We are deeply grateful for his lasting impact on our community, and his legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come.

We send our heartfelt condolences to Tom’s family, friends, and colleagues across the country, abroad, and at NPR’s From The Top.
